Help for Caring for Older People Caring for an Adult with a Developmental Disability

Manual

This guide/manual was developed via a demonstration project of national significance funded by the U.S.
Administration on Aging in the late 1990s. The focus is on how agencies in the aging network that already help older persons can also implement an initiative to help caregivers of adults with a developmental disability. The manual applies also to other agencies or persons who want to do the same. The publication examines the differences between the developmental disabilities system and the aging network, provides useful tips on implementing a program on aiding older carers, and explores some of the situations that may be encountered when aiding caregivers. The manual provides information on adults with a developmental disability and their carergivers, and introduces models that can be employed to aid "two-generation" elderly families, as well as approaches for aiding families from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
